George Gershwin was one of the most prolific American composers of the 20th century. He was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1898 to Ukrainian immigrants, Morris and Rosa Gershowitz. He began to study piano at a young age and was instructed by noted piano teacher Charles Hambitzer. After dropping out of high school at the young age of 15, he began his career as a song-plugger. A song-plugger was somebody who demonstrated new sheet music to be sold in a music store. He did this for three years and by that time had turned into a highly skilled pianist. In 1916 he composed his first published song entitled â€Å"When You Want ’Em You Can’t Get ’Em†. From 1920 to 1924, he composed for an annual production put on by George White. Legend has it†¦show more content†¦What those critics didn’t know is that Gershwin’s composition would become an internationally recognized piece of American music. When you listen to Gershwin’s work it’s hard to not be amazed in what you are hearing. It is difficult to describe parts of the music that you like because there are so many. Several critics claimed the piece was not fluid and seemed to be just put together. One critic said you â€Å"can remove any of these stuck-together sections and the piece still goes on as bravely as before.† (Gershwin, 2012). We believed that this made the piece unique. The beginning of the piece briefly introduces all the different themes in short solos before expounding on all of them later which is something that was not common during this time either. We also enjoyed the â€Å"American† feeling that was on display throughout the piece. It is a melting pot of themes and ideas that all seem to fit together perfectly. â€Å"Rhapsody in Blue† is a difficult piece to dislike. The only critical comment that we could make about this wonderful piece is that it was hard to follow. Even though the sporadic tempos and themes make this an iconic piece of American music history, it had a sense of not being organized. The One Thing Needful from the Hard Times by Charles Dickens Essay The One Thing Needful from the Hard Times by Charles Dickens Hard times, published in 1854, Dickens shortest novel was not popular in its day, though it has since received critical acclaim for its rousing satire against materialism. This is quote taken from Msn Encarta Encyclopedia. This extract is about a person who is considered to have authority and to be greatly respected telling other grown-ups how he wants children to be taught and how they should be taught, this shows what education in the 19th century might have been like. The main purpose of this text is to emphasise what should be taught and how it should be taught and the speaker thinks that by enforcing a teaching method, children will have better lives as it would be based on nothing but facts. This passage makes modern children compare and think about how lucky they are to be able to express how they feel and imagine things. The way the word Facts is written and repeated shows their importance in the speakers life, this also highlights how important the thought of teaching facts is, well at least to the speaker, this explains why it is written as a proper noun with the use of a capital letter, the speaker personifies Facts. Dickens deliberately uses repetition to represent the way in which children learn, by repetition. The speaker refers to children in several ways, but his main point is that children learn by things being repeated to them. This explains why he calls them reasoning animals, because animals learn by things being repeated to them and once they are used to it they would do it automatically. The speaker is trying to say that teaching them facts is like training them to be good, but unlike animals, human beings especially children have opinions and wild imaginations. Dickens uses a metaphor, which could have different meanings. Plant nothing else and root out everything else. The fact he uses gardening shows that children are just like a garden: they have a lot of things in their heads, but grown-ups have to plant the seeds which are the facts in the garden to be able to make them grow properly. The structure of the passage has a great impact on what the reader thinks about the speaker after having read the first paragraph and after having read the last paragraph. From the way in which the writer describes the speaker, the audience has a clear understanding that the writer does not like the speaker. He is not mentioned by any names or titles but as the speaker; this leaves the reader to guess his identity and distances himself from the speakers view. The description of the speaker matches his sentence structures in the quotes. They are short, snappy and straightforward. Dickens describes him as square to show that he is predictable and unchangeable. The speaker makes sure that his point gets across and to do so he uses a harsh, strict tone. But l ater, it adopted its unique style, format and form. According to the book by Kerman and Tomlinson, â€Å"a four-movement format dominated Classical instrumental genres. The internal structures of important Classical forms associated with the four-movement plan: sonata form, theme and variations, minuet form, rondo form† (76). All these features can be found in the compositions written by Mozart, the most influential composer of the period. He lived a short life, but he managed to create music that will live forever. Mozart was a very talented child. He started performing before European royalty when he was 5. His first teacher was his father Leopold. One of such â€Å"perfect compositions† is Mozart’s Symphony No. 28 in C Major, part III (Menuetto: Allegreto). The symphony is arranged in the traditional classical symphonic form: Allegro vivace, Andante cantabile in F major, Menuetto: Allegretto – Trio, and Molto Allegro. The sonata is filled with contrasts and it is rather extraverted. It begins with the themes of symphony, but the second part of the trio is more acce ntuated and expressive. I guess, it is incorporated and modified with Allegretto. The characteristic feature of the symphony is the â€Å"five-voice fugato† that are aimed to present fife symphonic themes of the composition. In the third part, they are used in order to combine themes together. The motifs are joined in the â€Å"fugal cola†. The third part is characterized by classical harmony and â€Å"tender† melody that rises and falls through the composition. As for me, I was charmed with the music. I believe that it is a special ability to know to listen to the classical music and I am glad that I develop this ability. This topic is important because it will contain detailed information about the causes and effects of drug use, and the impact of substance abuse on society. Substance use is the consumption of low or infrequent doses of alcohol and other drugs, sometimes called experimental, casual, or social use, such that damaging consequences may be rare or minor. Addiction is the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity. In a CAMH 2009 study, 17.8% of Ontario students in gr. 7-12 use prescription pain relievers non-medically. That's just under 200,000 students - and that's just Ontario! Prescription drugs are the third most commonly abused substances by students in Ontario behind alcohol and marijuana. This research will explain the different types of substance abuse such as, no use, experimental use, social or occasional use, meditational use, har mful use and dependence. Substance abuse can include, alcohol, prescription drugs, street drugs and any form of opioids. These types of substances when abused can lead to criminal penalty, and can harm the user physically, socially, and psychologically. My main research questions is: How does substance abuse and addiction affect an individual and the society? A potential answer to this question can be it effects the persons health, social life and can cause financial issues through rehab treatments or supporting the addiction. Substance abuse affects the society because it is linked to homelessness, crime rates, and also influences violent and risky behavior which is costly to society. Other questions that will be answered include: What Are the Harmful Consequences of Drug Use? Why Do People Use Drugs? What is addiction? These three questions will go more in depth to the main research question, which will lead to a better understanding of substance abuse and addiction and its effect on a person and society. What Are the Harmful Consequences of Drug Use? Drugs are not considered harmful when used for medical purposes, illegal drug use causes harmful consequences such as, physical, mental, legal, economic and social problems. Safety hazards are a main concern for drug users, because they can distort reality, and can cause impaired sense of memory,and attention.This can cause the user harm to themselves or others around, ex, driving under the influence is a danger to an individual and the society. Knowing the tolerance level is another main factor for an individual using, users tend to increase their drug dosage in order to get the same effect, the body does not have always adapt to the new tolerance level, which leads to organ failure and overdose (OToole, 2014). Overdose can be fatal and may cause death depending on what drug and how much it is consumed, if survived from an overdose it leads to many metal and physical disabilities. Excessive use of substances lead to physical and mental health problems. Physical problems vary from what kind of substance being abused, alcohol will damage the liver, smoking tobacco or marijuana will damage the lungs, using needles to inject may cause HIV or Aids, and sniffing any form of powered drugs will damage the nose tissues. Drugs can also cause lung cancer, leukemia,and ovarian cancer( Associated Press, 2014). Mental health can include behavior problems, anxiety, depression, memory loss, and learning disability. Mental and physical health problems are the most harmful consequences an addict will have to face. According to a study published this month in The Lancet by Dr. Ben Kim, alcohol and tobacco rank among the ten most dangerous substances used by humans. Both alcohol and tobacco have been assessed to be more dangerous than illegal drugs like marijuana or ecstasy. Substance abuse and addiction can be just as harmful to the society as it is to the individual. Crime and violence correlate with substance abuse, in many studies and investigations it shows that most crime offenders have or use drugs. The Purple Rose of Cairo Essay Film has captured and enchanted audiences since its origination with the Lumiere Brothers; and, as it developed, it began to be used to convey messages and ideas. Film started to become a creative outlet that then turned to a catalyst of philosophical thought. Film theorist Sergei Einstein expressed that film â€Å"as a work of art, understood dynamically, is just the process of arranging images in the feelings and mind of the spectator†. Thus, directors began to realize that audience manipulation was possible through the images and sounds they delivered, as well as through the way these images and sounds were presented it all has an effect of how viewers thought of and interpreted the films. This is especially clear in the German film, Triumph of Will, directed by Leni Reifenstahl. While the film is brilliantly made, with moving cameras, the utilization of long focus lenses, aerial photography, and a revolutionary approach to musical accompaniment, the film was also incredibly propagandistic and manipulative at the time of it’s release. The entire film is a vehicle to promote the ideologies of Hitler; beginning with Germany’s near-destruction in World War I and depicting Hitler as a messiah, descending from the skies to greet his vehement followers. In the opening minutes of the film, there are close-up and over-the-shoulder shots of Hitler, making him seem rather personable, adored, and somewhat noble. There are also shots of children approaching him, showing that the ideas of innocence and purity are to be seen as parallel to the views and goals Hitler himself. Aesthetically, the entire film is superbly done, and politically its manipulative powers are astonishing. By showing Germany as unified under the divine rule of Hitler, it brought the nation together and created one of the most destructive and powerful nations in the 1940s. While film can be used as propaganda, like in Nazi Germany, it can also be used to provoke thought, rather than control it, manipulate it, or deceive it. In Woody Allen’s film The Purple Rose of Cairo, the audience is pushed to move beyond the appearance of things and consider other worlds, other perspectives. For the heroine, Cecilia, film is an escape and an impossible inspiration. According to the fictitious movie (The Purple Rose of Cairo), the purple rose itself is supposed to grow in a pharaoh’s tomb the expression of a perfect love. However, no flower can grow without light making it an impossible inspiration. According to Plato, and to partially to Allen, our relationship with truth is rather grim. When we attend movies we are much like Plato’s captives, chained facing a cave wall, only seeing a world of shadows our reality is suspended. But another point is made; although we can be deceived by shadows, we are also capable of understanding and questioning anything, shadows included. Yes, film is an escape from reality and the idea of being able to truly escape a somewhat horrid life is unimaginably wonderful, but thats just it it is an idea. Change has to be brought on by oneself, not an unreliable outside source, and perfection is an illusion. I as a viewer absolutely love how Allen presents these ideologies in The Purple Rose of Cairo. He gives it an unconventional point of view, setting up a series of contrasts between perfection and imperfection, reality and illusion, loving someone and being in love with someone, that forces us to think about film as well as the actual content of the film. And this all ties back to Plato’s â€Å"Allegory of the Cave†; our life is veiled and we must aspire to leave and become less dependent on the shadow world. What is interesting is that, in the film, Allen makes the audience unsure of which world is the shadow world and which is the illusion. The perfect world becomes the film world and the false one is the desired reality. As entertainment, the film is great a nonsensical romantic comedy with a less-than-happy ending; but philosophically it goes much deeper than that, provoking audiences to think about reality and the importance of imperfection. While on the subject of imperfection, a third film demands some attention. Alejandro Amenabar’s The Sea Inside presents a whole new perspective on what perfection in life is. Many people see suicide as a selfish act removing yourself from the lives of your loved ones far earlier than they would have liked. However, the question of who is more selfish is posed. Is it the people who remove themselves when they feel no more connection to life; or the people who expect those who want to leave to stay, regardless of their misery or feelings of lacking true connection to the vibrancy of life? Thus are the questions presented to audiences upon viewing this film. In my mind, everyone should have the freedom to choose the life they want to live, or not live; and to choose what meaning they take out of said life. In Clendine’s â€Å"The Good Short Life†, it is said that we speak of living life, but never of death. That â€Å"we act as if facing death weren’t one of life’s greatest, most absorbing thrills and challenges† and that being incoherent and immobile until one only sees friends and family as â€Å"a passing cloud†. Both Clendine and Ramon didn’t want to put their loved ones through that, and taking one’s life seemed to be the best solution. Both were â€Å"vital to the end, and knew when to leave†. In my opinion, if someone has legitimate, justifiable reasons to want to leave this earth (such as a degenerative disease), that they have a right to do so. And if they cannot on their own accord due to that degenerative disease, I think that others (physicians, family members, friends) should be legally permitted to assist them. They shouldn’t be obligated to assist, but if they give consent and are willing to aid, I think they should be permitted. Mark from Breathing Lessons and Ramon were also similar on a few levels, but Mark had more hope and determination to live with dignity. Unlike Ramon who saw his life as undignified, Mark viewed it more as excessively challenging. Mark still desired life though considered suicide, but â€Å"chickened out† showing that he did truly still want to live. Ramon, however, was lost in his melancholy and nostalgia for the past, choosing to disregard the possibilities the future could bring. I think that it is a personal choice and that each individual should be given the liberty of making that choice. The phrase â€Å"dying with dignity† always reminds me of greek mythology when humiliated warriors would throw themselves on their swords for an honorable death, rather than live life in humility. I think Ramon saw his life as more humiliating and therefore wanted to throw himself on his sword, so to speak. With this, I think that the US should have a â€Å"death with dignity† law. Everyone has a right to life, as well as a right to death. Film is one of the most influential and powerful media. It’s capabilities to provoke, cultivate, and manipulate audience thought is incredible and worth studying. The innovations that film itself has gone through the amount of genres it contains, special effects, and advancements in sound all contribute to film as a whole, and all contribute to the beauty of how film is created and suspends the reality of viewers if only for an hour or two.
